To kill a Mockingbird Review

To kill a mockingbird is is a narrative that is ultimately a deeply moral narrative about what it means to be a human being and the choices we make in terms of how we treat one another. I mean this goes to the heart of the message of Jesus basically. No matter what age you are this book can have a true profound effect upon your spirit. It is written so well and it’s so moving and the issues in many ways are timeless. It’s an iconic story for a lot of different reasons.

One is race in this country, which is one of the great wounds if not the greatest wound of the American story, and so any time a book touches upon that or delves into that in a serious way it is always a very profound journey and I think for that

reason alone this book is very important to us. It is about this decision that we all

have to make every single day, in a kind of existential way.

Who am I? How am I going to treat other people? What do I think is right in terms of my relationships with others? Particularly, how I treat the strangers. And so to kill a mockingbird is timeless in that way, because it really opens up those themes

and it really, I think, helps a person begin thinking about: okay this is one of

those moments and I can either take the high road or the low road. I can either

treat this person with dignity and respect, even when it’s not easy to do so.

So in that sense I think To Kill a Mockingbird is timeless.

Jean Louise mr. Arthur Radley I believe already knows you, there’s something

in the viewpoint of a child that unlocks wisdom and I think that’s part of the

thing that Harper Lee did in this book. She really helped unlock a very adult conversation through the eyes of a child, and so I love that and I have to

say I grew up in a small town. Every small town has their Boo Radley. It’s that somebody you don’t quite understand, he’s fearful, he’s mean, he’s this, he’s that, and yet we don’t really know the person. There’s such power in groups gravitating in one direction or another and, how hard it is for somebody to stand up. In a in a kind of moral way, in a deeply human way and say that thinking that behavior, that attitude, is absolutely wrong. It takes a person willing to take a value and not just

believe it theoretically, but to implement it into the situation where he or she may say.

There’s hardly anything more profound than when we are able to stand up for the dignity of another person, and we will speak on behalf of someone who cannot speak for themselves, and we will lift somebody up that everybody else wants to put down.

Good story and it’s more than just a good film. It’s the kind of film and the kind of story that makes you want to be a better person.
